The birth of Theatre at The Lights of Christmas

The lights dim slowly as the audience sips on tea and coffee after eating a gourmet meal. The anticipation for the theatre production grows and eyes widen as actors come onto the stage. For many in attendance, Theatre at The Lights of Christmas is a tradition they are eager for every year.

It all started 22 years ago when The Lights of Christmas founding event staff had a dream of using the power of theatre to bring their community together. Jeannie Patterson, the first director of The Lights of Christmas festival, shared “Being part of local theater groups made it clear what an impact live theater can have on an audience. We believed that this experience would add a unique and impactful component to The Lights of Christmas.” Little did Jeannie and the staff know their dream would become a reality and that the Theatre would be a popular holiday experience through the years.

Over the past five years, almost 10,000 people have attended Theatre at The Lights of Christmas. Each annual production is professionally solid, explores holiday themes, and is staffed with community talent. Audience members leave with a sense of hope, love and joy. Last year’s attendees said, “I enjoyed the live performance as well as getting to know my tablemates.” And, “the actors and the play were wonderful. Food was excellent and the atmosphere intimate.”

This year’s production is a comedy called, A Christmas Carol…More or Less, written by Stefano LoVerso and Mary Irey who are known for their work on Saturday Night Live and Ryan’s Hope. Directed by Victoria Ritchey and performed by experienced talent, the production scripts a creative tale about a small town theatre presenting, “A Christmas Carol,” only most of the cast and crew are snowed out! The show must go on! See what hilarious antics ensue as Charlie and Sarah are faced with the impossible task of doing the play themselves. Along the way, they are surprised to discover their own story in this classic Dickens’ tale. A humorous twist on a holiday classic.

Come and enjoy a memorable evening of live theatre and dining amidst the splendor of over one million lights. Dinner Theatre or Sunday Dessert Matinee options are available and both include admission to The Lights of Christmas Festival.

Just over 1,500 guests attended a special Dinner Theatre or Sunday Dessert Matinee amidst the splendor of the holiday atmosphere. Everyone was blessed with beautiful lights and warm hospitality.

Along with the dazzling light displays and fun activities, there were more food vendors than ever, so no one had to go away hungry. Thousands upon thousands of hot mini donuts were cooked to the delight of many. New food vendors in Tinhorn Town pleased guests with traditional BBQ and south of the border CariBean cuisine.

Shopping was brisk in the four gift shops found at The Lights of Christmas. Live entertainment at the five stages was joyous. Starry Night Coffee House & Gifts blended live music, hot drinks, and hand-made crafts. Whether guests were browsing the store, taking in the music, or just warming up with a hot latte, Starry Night brought holiday cheer to thousands.

Over 700 people donated more than 15,000 volunteer hours, making The Lights of Christmas possible. Parking, ticket sales, hospitality, courtesy carts, security, bussing tables, and other positions were filled by many generous volunteers. The faithful volunteers make The Lights of Christmas happen!

Beyond the spectacle of over one million lights is a clear message that The Lights of Christmas celebrates the gift of Jesus, the promised Messiah, Emmanuel – God with us. We pray guests left with light hearts filled with joy, wonder, and a sense of hope. We pray relationships are encouraged and memories made. Our prayer is that people come for the Christmas lights and leave with Jesus.
